Meet the Characters with Daryl Devore

_whib_coverHello and welcome to my blog for another round of Meet the Characters! Today I am featuring a guest blogger who has graciously agreed to let me do a character interview, which is my favorite kind of interview. Join me in welcoming author, Daryl Devore, and her characters from What Happens in Bangkok. It’s a fantastic erotic contemporary rock star romance with wonderful characters so without further ado here is the interview with Darien and Erika.

How did you first meet your writer?

She was sitting in the car driving down to North Carolina to visit her daughter. Her husband was flipping satellite radio channels and a Gloria Gaynor song came on. She picked up her laptop and – as they say – the rest is history.

Did you ever think that your life would end up being in a book?

Darien – Being an international celebrity – yes, I guess I did. But I expected it to be a biography not a hot romance.

What are your favorite scenes in your book: the action, the dialog or the romance?

Darien – Well – in the action – I almost got killed – not liking that. So, I’m voting for the romance.

Are you happy with the genre your writer has placed you in?

Darien – erotic romance – hell yes.

Erika – uh – Hello – do I get to say anything here.

Do you like the way the book ended?

Erika – no. Reality crashed in and I wasn’t ready.

Would you be interested in a sequel, if your writer was so inclined?

Erika – oh, she’s inclined. Two more books have already been written.

What do you do for a living?

Erika – I run a drag queen club, The Pink Flamingo, in Bangkok Thailand.

Darien – I’m a rock star.

What do you wear when you go to sleep?

Erika – a cami and shorts

Darien – until I take them off her.

What word makes you the happiest?

Erika – snuggled next to Darien watching a movie and munching popcorn

Darien – Well, there goes my rock star reputation.

What is your least favorite word?

Darien – World Tour. – Uh, that’s 2 words – how about WorldTour.

Are you a morning person or a night owl?

Erika – I can answer this one. He’s a night owl. We are usually on opposite sides of the planet, but I can call him at 4 in the afternoon my time and he’s probably up even though it’s 4 in the morning.

Darien – He’s right here and he has a name.

What’s the worst/weirdest thing you did as a kid?

Erika – Went to a Halloween party dressed as a tap dancing peanut.

Darien – I am the king of knock knock jokes.

Erika – Gawd yes, don’t get him started.

To save Darien’s life his brother asks, “Can you walk in high heels?”

Erika Bailey, owner/manager of a drag queen club in Bangkok, Thailand has happily settled into all aspects of her new life, except for her lack of a love life. When a new diva auditions, Erika is bewildered over her instant attraction to the blond God, Apollo.

Darien Scott is on vacation after a world tour and mistakenly figures the safest place to be is at The Black Dragon with the head of a Triad. When the club is hit, Darien is the only person to get out alive. Now he’s running from the police and a Triad. Mistake number 1.

Disguised as a drag queen, he’s hired by Erika, but falls hard for his new boss, then struggles with not coming clean with her. Mistake number 2.

Can he fix his mistakes and find a life filled with love or is he headed straight for mistake number 3?

She nibbled on three more wings, hoping she could think of some stimulating conversation. She always hated first dates. She never knew what to say or ask. And when she did, often it came out sounding lame or worse–creepy.

“I’ll start.” Apollo placed his glass on the table.

Erika hunched her shoulders and wiped her fingers on her paper napkin.

“To avoid the embarrassing silent moments on first dates, I did a little research.” He grinned. “I checked out fifteen things to talk to a girl about, and it said I should tell a funny story about myself. Something that’s happened in the past few days. Since you pretty much know my life since Friday, I’m going to skip down the list.”

Erika pursed her lips. “What about going from number one to number two? You know, logical order.”

“Well, the second suggestion was, how’d you end up living in this city. And since we’ve put that discussion in the save-until-later box, I need to shoot down the list.”

“Do you have the whole thing memorized?”

He nodded. “Ah, here’s one. What kinds of things make you laugh?”

She picked up a wing. “The visual of you standing on the table screaming about the snake.”

“Okay, let’s try what makes you laugh that doesn’t involve me humiliating myself.”

“Hmm.” She nibbled on the wing. “The Three Stooges. Road Runner cartoons. Oh, knock knock jokes.”

“Knock. Knock.”

She giggled. “Who’s there?”

“I’va who.”

“I’va sore hand from knocking.”

She tossed back her head and let her laughter ring. It wasn’t the joke that made her laugh so hard. It was the delight on his face telling her and the thrill that rippled through her. “Another one.”

“Another question or another knock knock? ‘Cause I got a ton of them. If I can dig ’em out of the cobwebs of my memory.”

She swallowed her mouthful of food and sipped her Orange Mirinda. “Another question. If we get going on knock knocks, we’ll be knock knocking all night.” Although knocking boots with you might be a night to remember.

Apollo frowned in concentration while scooping up more salsa. “Number three was what’s your favorite place in the whole world? But I know that one. Sidewalk café, sipping wine, eating cheese, looking at the Eiffel Tower.”

Erika bit back a squeal. He remembered! Oh, that’s just too fantastic. Can I take this guy home and keep him?

He picked up the last monkey wing. “Did you have a nickname as a kid?”

The waitress paused beside them and placed their orders on the table. Erika’s two tacos were a visual delight. The vivid colors of the taco shell, the savory scent of the meat, the cilantro and melted cheese delighted her eyes and nose. The spicy aroma from the sautéed onions teased her taste buds. She looked across the table at Apollo, who was examining his meal with equal delight. “Should I say one, two, three go?”

He picked up a taco, opened his mouth wide and bit. “Mmm.”

“Not such a bad idea after all, huh? Mexican food in Thailand.”

“You’re forgiven for being crazy.”

Both spent the next few minutes focused on consuming their mouthwatering meals. As her hunger diminished, Erika looked up from her plate and blurted, “Cuddle Bunny.”

He stopped chewing and blinked.

“You asked if I had a nickname. My dad used to call me Cuddle Bunny.”

With drag queen flair, he wiped his forehead. “For a second there I thought you were calling me Cuddle Bunny.”

“But my friends called me Nutter-Butter.” She placed her hands in a tent shape over her mouth and nose and stifled a laugh. “It was one of those things you had to be there. I went to a Halloween party as a tap dancing peanut.”

5 Star Review –

I loved this story. From the very beginning I was on the edge of my seat until I finished it several hours later. I couldn’t put the book down. I needed to know what was going to happen to Darien and Erika next. Fast paced from the first word and with several surprises I’d highly recommend this book.

5 Stars

This book got me hooked from the opening line with Darien puzzling as to why blood was seeping from his wolf tattoo. The chemistry between Darien and Erika sizzles from the first time they meet, even though she’s no idea who he is, nor the fact that he’s actually straight.

What I loved about this book was that it isn’t just about Darien and Erika. A whole cast of characters are vividly brought to life and though I didn’t like them all, particularly Gan I seriously wanted to gag whenever he appeared, they added another dimension to the story.

The action is fast paced, there are enough twists and turns in the plot to keep you guessing and the romance was hot. A great read, especially if you love stories in exotic locations.

5 Stars

What happens in Bangkok is the first book i have read from this author and i highly recommend it. I couldn’t put it down was captured from the first to the last page. This book will keep you on the edge of your seat with all the twist and turns it gives you. Will so be looking for more from this author
