Meet the Characters with Nancy Gideon

unleashed-front-cover-correctedHello and welcome to my blog for another round of Meet the Characters! Today I am featuring a guest blogger who has graciously agreed to let me do a character interview, which is my favorite kind of interview. Join me in welcoming author, Nancy Gideon, and her characters from Unleashed by Shadows. It’s a fantastic paranormal romance with wonderful characters so without further ado here is the interview with Cale and Kendra.

How did you first meet your writer?

Kendra: In HUNTER OF SHADOWS in the “BY Moonlight” dark paranormal shape-shifter series. My cousin Brigit brought me to New Orleans in hopes that she could guilt her brother Silas into taking me as his mate to save me from being claimed by one of the beastly princes in the House of Terriot. We’d grown up as best friends, the three of us, and Silas was always my secret crush. It was understood that we’d be together as soon as we were free of our obligation to Bram Terriot. But Silas lost his heart to someone else, and I had to return to the Terriots in order to protect them.

Cale: You make returning to me sound like a fate worse than death.

Kendra: It was at the time.

Cale: Only because you, our author, and the readers didn’t get a chance to know me until our book, PRINCE OF SHADOWS, and understood that everything I did, no matter how terrible, was so we could be together.

What do you do for a living?

Cale: Starting out as the weakest prince of the Twelve in the House of Terriot, I battled my way over blood and bones to claim its throne from my monster of father. Ruling a shape-shifter clan on the verge of war with its rivals, and keeping it from being torn apart by one of my rogue brothers has been a full time job so far. My other, more pleasurable job is creating an heir to continue our line.

Kendra: After a lifetime of depending on others for survival, I’m learning how to protect my mate so I can help rule our clan at his side. It feels good to find a purpose. Cale always believed in me and saw me as his queen. He helped me find the strength to stand beside him, and sometimes stand up to him when his pride gets in the way of what’s in his best interest.

Cale: What? Me? I’m a prince of a guy.

Kendra: (rolls eyes) Yes, my king.

What do you like to do when you are not being actively read somewhere?

Cale: (winks) We’re kinda busy working on creating that Terriot heir.

Kendra: Which would be fulltime employment if he had his way.

Cale: (brows lifting) You’re complaining?

Kendra: (smiles demurely) No, my king.

Would you be interested in a sequel, if your writer was so inclined?

Kendra: Absolutely! The great thing about this series, is all of us get to return for a visit in each other’s “Moonlight” or “Shadows” books. Cale and I were lucky enough to come back in UNLEASHED BY SHADOWS to continue working on our forever Happily-Ever-After. Don’t worry, you don’t need to read all the other books first – but you’ll want to afterwards! We’ll be popping up in the next “House of Terriot Foursome” books which will feature Cale’s brothers, and then . . . our author always has new ways to complicate our lives . . . perhaps in a next generation.

What do you wear when you go to sleep?

Cale: Nothing but my queen wrapped around me.

Kendra: And I’m not complaining.

What is your most prized possession?

Kendra: Cale’s father gave each of his sons a pair of huge diamond ear studs when they came of age as a sign of their total allegiance to him and his crown. After Cale was given his when we were children, he gave one of the pair to me saying I held half of all he was. That was the last time we were alone together. I never knew the price he paid for giving me that gift until 20 years later.

Cale: (touches the earring’s mate that he wears and smiles) That’s still true. I’d have to say my brothers’ trust. Having them stand beside me when I overthrew our father meant everything to me. We grew up as rivals, in competition sometimes to the death with one another, so spending time with them, getting to know who they really are has been priceless. Family means everything to me.

What is something no one knows about you? Why do you keep it a secret? And what would happen if everyone found out about it?

Cale: I have a dark past and have done things in the name of family honor that were wrong in every sense of the word. In order to have Kendra, I had to have the power of the crown behind me. Those were hard, soulless years. We’ve come to terms with them. But there’s one secret I haven’t shared, a debt I haven’t paid. It’s buried so deep I don’t know how to exorcise it. I’m afraid if I do, it’ll destroy me and I’ll lose everything I love.

Kendra: You know I’d forgive you anything.

Cale: Except this.

What word makes you the happiest?

Kendra: When Cale calls me Katy. It’s a nickname he gave me when we were kids that only has meaning to us. I like the sound of “my queen”, too.

Cale: I enjoy lots of words, but my favorite starts with F and plays well with everything from noun to verb.

Do you believe in ghosts/evil spirits/mysticism? Would you spend the night in a remote haunted house?

Cale: I never believed in any of that woo-woo crap until those bad deeds I was telling you about started reaching out to me like the ghosts of Christmas past. I became my own haunted house filled with the spirits of all the dead I left behind. That was one packed real estate until Silas and his lady, and Max Savoie, the leader of the clan here in New Orleans, taught me a thing or two about a world just beyond our reach that I never knew existed. And things about me I never knew existed. Do I believe? Hell yes, or I wouldn’t be sitting here.

Have you ever thought about getting a tattoo, what would it be and where? If not, what if you had to?

Cale: I have our clan’s tattoo on my shoulder in honor of my family. When I went undercover on the docks in New Orleans to help Silas track down a dangerous new Shifter drug, I joined their paramilitary Patrol that polices the supernatural doings in the Quarter. (shows red and black tattoo of flames rising from his right hand to a snarling wolf’s head near his elbow). I got this to fit in and now I kinda like it.

Kendra: I have one.

Cale:(turning to her) When did you get that? Where is it?

Kendra: (blushing) I’ll show you after the interview.

Cale: (standing) I think we’re done here.

“Complex characters, vivid writing and intriguing plot twists keep readers coming back to Gideon’s magical NOLA.” –Publishers Weekly

His dangerous masquerade in a high-stakes Shifter fight club is about to be exposed to those who would show no mercy – if he can survive in the ring.

How to protect a prince turned king made pawn?

Fearing she’ll lose her soulmate to the darkness he carries inside, Kendra Terriot, newly made queen in the Shape-shifter House of Terriot, must provide him with an heir in order to save his life . . . and his soul. But first she must risk all to coax him back from the edge of violence inherited with his crown.

Can her love tear him from an unbreakable vow that can only end in death?

“Every delicious word Nancy Gideon puts on the page exhilarates with a sensuous ferocity. Hopelessly addicted.” —Darynda Jones, NY Times Bestselling Author

He feared no man, no foe, no obstacle or challenge. He’d learned to stand his ground and take it without a wince while growing up with the most to prove in the House of Terriot. Schooled beneath the heavy heel and meaty fists of Bram Terriot, bearing the marks of those lessons scored into his skin and once tender psyche, he understood intimidation better than he did compassion. He’d once indulged in every savagery now expected from him and would have become a brutal monster walking the same path his father followed if not for two things: The brothers who’d fearlessly stood beside him and the female brave enough to believe his claims.
He owed them. He owed his family prosperous lives without fear and subjugation, where pride wasn’t measured in cruelties. He owed the woman he loved the fulfillment of promises made by a starry-eyed boy. He owed them a future in which they bowed to no one and had no reason to expect the worse from one another. To achieve those things, all he had to do was right the wrongs of the man who’d desecrated the crown he now represented.
All . . .
With a weary laugh, Cale closed his eyes.
His debt. His burden. His to carry and complete alone. No whining about the costs to body, heart or soul. No crying over what couldn’t be changed or repaired. No shirking from sacrifices sure to cost more than he’d ever thought to wager. The blood on his hands would never come clean. There was no forgiveness for his sins—the sins of the father now those of the son. He was lost but he wouldn’t drag those he loved and respected down with him. Not while he still had strength and breath and opportunity.
He couldn’t save his people hiding on their mountain top. He couldn’t purge his guilt without a willingness to surrender his life.
And he couldn’t protect his mate if he couldn’t provide her with his heir.
