Meet the Characters with Nancy Gideon

from-this-day-forwardHello and welcome to my blog for another round of Meet the Characters! Today I am featuring a guest blogger who has graciously agreed to let me do a character interview, which is my favorite kind of interview. Join me in welcoming author, Nancy Gideon w/a Dana Ransom, and her characters from From This Day Forward. It’s a fantastic contemporary romance with wonderful characters so without further ado here is the interview with Kyle and Robyn.

How did you first meet your writer?

Robyn: Back in 1993. Kyle and I were in the final story in a four book contract.

Did you ever think that your life would end up being in a book?

Kyle: Other than at a police station? (gets all elbow from Robyn) It almost didn’t! We had two close calls. First, the editor, who’d just gotten married, was totally burned out on the whole wedding thing and wasn’t going to buy our story. But our resourceful author convinced her that by the time she had to edit it, she’d feel nostalgic and could think of it as an anniversary present.

Robyn: Then, the month before our book was supposed to be on the shelves, the line it was in got cancelled. We would have ended up in a drawer if it hadn’t been for Debra Dixon at BelleBooks who reissued the first three books and final got our story out in print (and e-book!).

Kyle: I kinda liked just the two of us sharing that drawer space.

What are your favorite scenes in your book: the action, the dialog or the romance?

Robyn: (sighs) The romance. I’m a professional. (Kyle raises an eyebrow making her blush). A business professional. (He raises it higher and gets a scowl). Wedding planning professional.

Kyle: I’m still thinking about that shared drawer space.

What do you do for a living?

Robyn: With the help of Kyle’s sister’ booking, I’m making my dream of owning a successful business come true. I can’t think of anything more fulfilling than helping couples make that perfect memory.

Kyle: Instead of making them for yourself.

Robyn: Excuse me?

Kyle: Did I stutter? Those afraid to do . . .

Robyn: Pot meet kettle.

Kyle: Excuse me?

Robyn: An award-winning news cameraman taking wedding portraits for his sister in exchange for room and board? Or should I say a place to hide?

Kyle: (begrudgingly)      Touche.

Who was your first girlfriend/boyfriend and what do you like most about them?

Robyn: Gene. I married him. He was my first everything. My family adored him. We had our entire future planned out. But we never had the chance to live it together. He was my soul mate.

Kyle: (looking annoyed at her answer) My mom’s doubles partner, Mrs. Robertson. She was . . . educational. She had a phenomenal backhand and world class stamina.

Robyn: (dryly) Don’t you mean Mrs. Robinson?

What are you proudest of?

Robyn: Making my own business viable. After Gene died, it’s the only thing that kept me going. Taking care of all the details and making sure things run smoothly is so fulfilling.

Kyle: And keeps you from finding time to think about anything else. Or anyone else. I’m doing my part to see that my sister gets the happily ever after she deserves. That’s achievement enough.

What embarrasses you?

Kyle:    Nothing.

Robyn: Not meeting expectations. (glances at Kyle) Or inappropriate scenes in public.

Kyle: Moi?

What do you find most appealing in men/women?

Kyle:    Spontaneity. I like a sense of adventure. Live on the edge, I always say.

Robyn: (scowling at him) Dependability.

What is your vivid memory of your mother and father?

Robyn: The harmony in our house. It was like living in a ‘50s TV show, Dad going off to work, Mom running bake sales and keeping everything spotless. They were a well-oiled machine together. That’s what they wanted me to have with Gene.

Kyle: The perfect Stepford family needing to reproduce. (snorts) Unlike mine . . . except on the surface. My country club parents lived in their own separate worlds, and we kids lived in a different universe. I practically raised my younger brother and sister. We only interested my mother if she could show off our accomplishments. I wasn’t her star performer. My dad was rather confused by the whole children thing except the one time he took me fishing because I wanted to go. That was my entire life with my dad in that moment.

What is something no one knows about you? Why do you keep it a secret? And what would happen if everyone found out about it?

Kyle:    (looks at Robyn) That you’re not perfect? Scandal! What would happen? Would the world end? Dogs and cats start living together without the benefit of the services you provide?

Robyn: I’ll tell them mine if you tell them yours.

Kyle: (Silence)

Blurb:

Can two broken hearts make a perfect match?

Widowed on her honeymoon, Robyn Lee pours all her unfulfilled dreams of a happily-ever-after into her wedding planner business, hiding her own heartbreak by making perfect memories for couples beginning the loving future she was denied. The last thing she needs is the brother of her dream client—whose endorsement will guarantee Robyn’s success—to rock the boat…and her regimented world.

Through the lens of his camera, photojournalist Kyle Travers has witnessed all the ugliness life can offer. Still reeling from the death of his news partner in the field, he sees the frilly job of photographer at his sister’s wedding as an annoyance—until he meets the steely organizer who protects her broken spirit almost as fiercely as he does his own—making him wonder if two fractured halves can make a stronger whole.
